0.6.3 Patch - Introducing touch control
This patch includes some bug fixes and improvements, but the biggest new thing is the touch control method. Now you can control the orca by simply pressing/clicking where you want it to go, which should make things easier if you were having problems with the keyboard controls. It doesn’t offer you as much control over the movement as the regular input method, though, but that’s inevitable.
You can also double-click to boost (can be disabled in settings), so you only need one extra key for rolling, which you can set to whatever you want.
This feature, together with the new touchscreen buttons, is meant to make the game playable on mobile. Sadly, it apparently still doesn’t work properly (at least on my phone), so I’ll try to make it work for the next update.
QoL:
- Added new “Auto-save scores by default” setting, which controls the default value of the “Don’t save this score” checkbox in the Game Over screen.
Accesibility:
- Added new “Touch control” input method, allowing to control the orca by simply pressing where you want it to go.
- Updated beginner tips for new controls.
- Added mouse-less menu navigation to all game menus.
Touch control:
- When you click or touch anywhere on the screen, the orca will:
- Accelerate proportionally to the relative distance of your input, capping at a distance of 300 px.
- Rotate proportionally to the relative angle of your input w.r.t. her current direction, capping at a 60º angle, and requiring a minimum of ~1º to accept your input.
- A visual indicator will display your input, for clarity (can be disabled in the settings).
- You can boost by double-clicking/tapping and holding.
- Touch control can be enabled/disabled in settings (enabled by default).
- This method has some limitations compared to the flexibility of the regular input (you cannot reverse, rotate statically, etc.). This limitations will hopefully be minimized in the future.
UI:
- Added new “info” button on the main menu, containing tips, patch notes, and credits, and replacing the old “tips” and “credits” buttons.
- Added touchscreen buttons for rolling and boosting, which should make the game playable in mobile along with the new touch control method (still needs testing + pause button).
Bug fixes:
- Near-static harpoon spears no longer produce “fly-by” sound effects when swimming through them.
- Fixed bug where the pause button was not responding correctly in some cases.
